ANIMALS ART From the point off subject matter, up until the 16th century, the dog had been relegated to a secondary role in portraits, religious amd myphological works. Indeed, the inclusion of dogs in such scenes was not even an indication that the artist had studies the dog from nature. Rather, the dog was often just a symbol, in some way supporting the principal subject matter of the painting. While few specific dog portraits are known from the 17th century, the dog did play an important role in depiction of the hunt.
